Do I Need an Interior Designer? A Builder’s Perspective.

“Do I need an interior designer?” It’s one of the most common questions we get early in the process—and the honest answer is: it depends.

Not every project requires an interior designer. But many (maybe even most) benefit from having one involved. If you’re trying to decide what makes sense for you, here’s the simple litmus test we often walk through with clients:

1. Do you know your style and what you like?

Can you clearly articulate your preferences? Do you have a strong sense of what you’re drawn to—and what you’re not?

2. Are you decisive?

Can you make decisions fairly quickly, with confidence, and stick with them? Or do you tend to second-guess and revisit choices?

3. Do you have the time?

Do you realistically have the space in your schedule to manage dozens (and dozens) of selections, meetings, and follow-ups?

If you can confidently answer yes to all three, you might do just fine navigating the design side on your own.

But Here’s the Reality

Building a truly custom home involves a lot of decisions—more than most people expect going in. From plumbing fixtures and lighting to tile layouts, cabinet details, paint colors, hardware, and beyond…the volume alone can become overwhelming. And it’s not just about making selections—it’s about coordinating them, sequencing them, and making sure everything works together.

Even for clients who are decisive and have a strong sense of style, having a professional involved can be incredibly valuable.

Think of a designer less as someone who takes over—and more as someone who:

  • Helps you refine and elevate your ideas

  • Keeps everything cohesive from room to room

  • Guides you toward where to invest (and where to save)

  • Catches things you might not think about until it’s too late

  • Brings a level of detail and intentionality that’s hard to replicate on your own

Sometimes, even just having someone to gut-check decisions can pay dividends in the long run.

Where We Fit In

We consider ourselves very strong when it comes to designing functional, well-laid-out homes—and we’d like to think we have pretty good taste, too. But we’re not interior designers—and we don’t try to be.

What we do bring is a builder’s perspective:

  • How selections impact cost

  • How details are actually built in the field

  • How decisions today affect the overall execution of the home

That perspective pairs really well with a designer who is focused on aesthetics, cohesion, and the finer details.

Finding the Right Fit

The good news is that interior design isn’t one-size-fits-all.

We work with a number of designers who offer a range of service levels—from full-service design to more limited, consultative support. There are options at a variety of investment levels.

A good designer can also:

  • Help coordinate both interior and exterior selections

  • Keep the process organized and moving forward

  • Ensure your budget is being used intentionally—spending where it matters most and saving where it doesn’t

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to have an interior designer. But if you value clarity, cohesion, and a more streamlined experience—and want to make the most of. your investment—it’s often a decision that makes the entire process smoother (and more enjoyable).

If you’re trying to figure out whether bringing in a designer is the right move, we’re always happy to talk it through with you. We can help you think through your specific project, your decision-making style, and how involved you want to be in the process.

And if bringing in a designer does make sense, we’re happy to connect you with someone who aligns. with your style, your project, and your priorities.
